Do I Need a VPN?
A simple breakdown of what a VPN does, why it can help with streaming, and how to get started.
What is a VPN?
A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is a service that helps protect your internet connection and privacy online.
It creates a secure encrypted tunnel for your internet traffic and helps hide your IP address, making your connection more private from your internet provider and other outside sources.
Why do I need one?
Believe it or not, internet providers can sometimes restrict, slow down, or interfere with access to certain websites, apps, services, streams, or addons.
This can be one of the reasons you may have trouble accessing certain apps, services, streams, Kodi addons, Tivimedia, KWTV, or KWTV XC.
Streaming live TV can use a lot of data, and usage can be even higher during busy times like fight nights, major sporting events, or high-demand channels. When your internet provider detects heavy streaming traffic, they may slow down or throttle the connection.
When that happens, you may experience buffering, freezing, loading issues, or channels not opening the way they should.
A VPN can help mask your activity from your internet provider, which may give you a more consistent connection. It also lets you choose from different server locations, which can sometimes help improve streaming performance.
How do I get a VPN?
We personally recommend IPVanish because it works well with most Fire TV, Android TV, Google TV, and streaming devices.
- Subscribe to IPVanish.
-
Install the IPVanish app on your device.
- Fire TV / Fire Stick: Go to Search / Find, then search for IPVanish.
- Android TV / Google TV Boxes: Open the Google Play Store and search for IPVanish.
- Open the IPVanish app and log in.
- Choose a server location and click Connect.
- Once connected, open your streaming app and use your TV, stick, or box like normal.
Need help with VPN settings?
If you already have a VPN installed but streams still are not working correctly, your VPN settings may need to be adjusted.
We put together a separate guide with recommended VPN settings, protocol tips, and troubleshooting steps for streaming devices.
Still having stream issues?
I always take every report of stream issues seriously, and I follow up as much as possible.
However, if I do not have the issue on my end, and most other users are not experiencing the same problem, then the issue is usually not coming from the service itself.
In those cases, the problem is often related to the device, app settings, internet connection, Wi-Fi strength, VPN setup, or your internet provider.
