How to Fix “URL Error in Downloader”

If Downloader is showing a URL error, it does not always mean the website is down. These are the most common causes on FireTV and GoogleTV devices.

🔧 Quick Fixes — In Order

1. Fully Restart the Device

Do a real reboot from Settings — not just unplugging it.

Fire TV
Settings → My Fire TV → Restart
Google TV
Settings → System → Restart

2. Force Stop + Clear Cache on Downloader

This fixes corrupted web sessions constantly.

Fire TV
Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Apps → Downloader

Then:

  • Force Stop
  • Clear Cache
  • Relaunch Downloader

Do NOT clear data unless needed.

3. Test the Actual Short Link Manually

Sometimes Bitly gets temporarily blocked or DNS fails.

Instead of typing:

bit.ly/KWTVAPPS

Try this instead:

  • Use the numeric Downloader code: 90281

Bitly can intermittently fail on certain ISP or DNS setups.

4. Check Downloader Browser Permissions

If Downloader lost browser or storage permissions, downloads can fail with vague “unknown error” messages.

Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Apps → Downloader → Permissions

Allow:

  • Storage / Files
  • Install unknown apps
Settings → My Fire TV → Developer Options → Install Unknown Apps → Downloader = ON

5. VPN / ISP Filtering

Some ISPs silently block things like:

  • URL shorteners
  • APK hosting
  • Redirect chains

Even though the website itself is alive, the connection may still be blocked.

Try:

  • Connecting to a VPN
  • Changing VPN protocol from WireGuard to OpenVPN
  • Using your phone hotspot temporarily

If it suddenly works on VPN or hotspot, it is most likely ISP-level filtering.
